Councillors are being urged to back calls made by campaigning residents for action to stop speeding motorists from using a "dangerous" route into Much Wenlock as a rat run.

People living in Farley, on the edge of the town, say not enough is being done to slow down vehicles along the A4169.

Residents on the narrow stretch of the road, where it becomes Sheinton Street, have held meetings and lobbied the town council and Shropshire Council about vehicles' speed and use of the road as a short-cut.

Tonight town councillors will decide whether to back the calls for action.

In a report to members Councillor David Turner says the proximity of large vehicles to the single footpath in Sheinton Street can be 'intimidating'. Previous measures appear to have made little difference.

He says the problem could be eased by encouraging long-distance hauliers to use the M54, A5 and A49 rather than 'a narrow street in a small town'.

His proposals include for the council to agree Farley and Sheinton Street residents have genuine concerns about safety and for it to make a formal request for speed enforcement to the Safer Roads Partnership.
