Car owners in Edgmond and Tibberton, both near Newport, awoke yesterday morning to find items including more than £250 in cash, games consoles and expensive sunglasses had been stolen.

The attacks happened between 10pm on Sunday and 8am yesterday.

Chris Ammonds, spokesman for Newport police, said up to eight vehicles were broken into while another five were damaged.

He said: "This is an unusual series of inci-dents and therefore we have ensured that forensic officers have attended each report in an attempt to find additional evidence.

"The investigation is ongoing and alth-ough we are keeping an open mind we are looking at the possibility that they were all committed by the same thieves."
