The president of Wenlock Olympian Society, Roy Rogers, has died aged 79 after a short illness.

Mr Rogers, from Craven Arms, had been president of the group since 2005 and was previously chairman of Shropshire County Athletic Association for 18 years. He died on Saturday.

He had previously officiated at international athletics events including the Barcelona Olympics and the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh, Auckland and Manchester.

His first major event as an official was in 1954, when he witnessed Roger Bannister's historic four-minute mile record.

Helen Clare Cromarty, an executive committee member of the Wenlock Olympian Society, said: "Roy led a full an active life in the athletics world.

"His quiet common sense and his breadth of knowledge on the athletic world will be greatly missed."

Mrs Cromarty said Mr Rogers's death had come as a shock to everyone involved with the society.

Mr Rogers leaves behind his wife, Barbara.
