Motorists faced long tailbacks today after a crash involving two cars on the A5 in Shropshire.
Traffic came to a standstill at 8.15am following the smash, which happened near Junction 7 of the M54 at Wellington.
Police diverted motorists into the outside lane to allow ambulances to reach the smash.
Central Motorways Police Group said one person had suffered injuries and that officers were still on the scene with paramedics at 9.15am.
A spokeswoman said: "We have no further information yet as the incident is on-going."
Motorists passing the scene said that five cars had stopped in the inside lane, with extensive damage to the front of a silver Renault Clio and the rear of another vehicle.
Peter Finch, 24, from Shrewsbury, said: "We all came to a standstill for a few minutes and the cars parted to let an ambulance get down the middle of the road.
"All the cars were asked to move slowly into the outside lane. There was glass and plastic and metal strewn all over the inside lane.
"It must have been a quite a smash, but nobody seemed to be too badly hurt," he added.
"The bonnet was very crumpled on the Clio and most of the bumper from the other car was smashed all over the road."
