More than £500,000 will need to be spent repairing a 150-year-old bridge in Mid Wales after it was closed to traffic and pedestrians after cracks were spotted in the structure.

The cracks in Aberbechan Bridge, on the B4389, near Newtown, were noticed by Powys County Council workers, who also saw some stonework falling into the river below.

Council bosses closed the bridge on January 4 and have said it is likely to remain shut "for months".

And today Powys County Council said it expected the costs of repairs to come in at more than £500,000.

A spokesman for PCC said: "Although a full assessment has yet to be carried out on Aberbechan Bridge, the cost of repairing the structure could be from £500,000 upwards.

"The assessment on the structure will determine how the council will repair the damage and provide an more accurate cost of those repairs. However, as it is a listed structure over a river, we will need to consult the Environment Agency and Cadw on any works."
