The man was attacked at about 10pm yesterday, shortly after withdrawing money from the cashpoint which is outside Barclays Bank in Market Place in the town.

The man suffered minor cuts and was due to attend hospital today for a check-up.

Nothing was stolen and he was assisted by a member of the public.

Officers carried out a search after the offence and arrested three men in the Church Street area a short time later.

West Mercia Police spokesman Richard Ewels said: "Three men were arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery following an immediate search of the area.

"They are currently in custody at Shrewsbury police station being questioned.

"Our investigations are continuing and anyone who witnessed the incident or who has information which might assist, should get in touch. Information can also be given to Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111."
