A controversial scheme to build 10 "eco homes" in a north Shropshire town has been refused by councillors after it sparked a petition signed by more than 800 people.

Andrew Davies, Shropshire Council member for Cheswardine, had applied to the council to build 10 homes in Banky Field, off Walkmill Road, Market Drayton.

But at a meeting of the unitary council's north planning committee in Wem yesterday, the scheme was unanimously thrown out by members because of fears over the loss of open space.

People living close to the proposed site flooded Shirehall planners with letters of objection. They also cited concerns about visual impact and over-development.

Members of Market Drayton South Residents' Group were among those who strongly objected due to loss of green space.

Councillor David Minnery said: "It would have a catastrophic effect on the environment in Market Drayton."

Councillor Chris Mellings said: "The location is the key issue. There are concerns about highways and it would have a strong impact on the locality."

Last year, in the face of public opposition, Mr Davies submitted, but then withdrew, a planning application to build 57 homes on the same site.
