Residents living near Morrisons in Wellington said their lives were being plagued by young drivers meeting at the supermarket car park to show off their vehicles and perform stunts.
Police and supermarket bosses teamed up to try and get barriers put in place to stop anybody driving on to the car park after the shop closed.
Sergeant Russ Yeomans, of Wellington police, said the barriers had already seemed to make a difference.
He said: "The barriers are in place which means nobody can get on to the car park outside store opening hours.
"We are certainly not getting the complaints we were.
"They have been up for a couple of weeks and we have not had a complaint as yet so hopefully they have done the job."
Residents living at the back of the store reported "boy racers" wheel-spinning and racing around the car park late at night.
Police said something had to be done before someone was seriously injured.
Store general managerMark Dowell said the community was very important to them and he wanted to do all he could to ensure their neighbours enjoyed a peaceful life.
