Thousands of homes and businesses in the Wellington area were plunged into darkness after a power cut.

Just over 4,700 customers were left without power when a fault developed on the network shortly before 11.40pm yesterday.

The majority had power restored by 1.30am today.

But 254 customers were still without power by mid-morning.

A generator was brought in to provide electricity for all but seven customers while the problem was fixed.

Central Networks press officer Victoria Blake said today: "We have had a fault on the overhead network which is causing problems.

"It happened last night at 11.38 and it initially affected 4,708 customers in the Wellington area.

"At 1.30 this morning the majority were back on, just leaving 254 customers off supply. We have got a generator to provide power for 247 of them.

"We are working to get the others back on as quickly as we can."

She said engineers had been sent to the area to fix the problem.

She added: "We are doing everything we can to get people back onto supply as quickly as possible and apologise for the disruption."

Meanwhile just over 50 households in the Lawley Farm area of Telford were without power from 8.30am after an underground cable fault.
