Oswestry's mayor today claimed a recent increase in the number of job vacancies in the town could be a signal that trade there is improving.
This week about six businesses in the town have been advertising for more staff.
Bosses of WH Smith, Johnsons the Cleaners, Stead and Simpson, Peacocks, Dog and Bone and The Plaice fish and chips shop have all been advertising for more staff.
The town's mayor, Elaine Channon, said it was good news for the town and particularly pleasing for youngsters in need of employment.
"I am absolutely delighted there are vacancies in the town," she said.
"It is good news. It is marvellous because if people are needing more staff then trade must be improving and that has got to be good for the town.
"Our young people, especially at this time of year, are always badly in need of employment. It has got to be good news.
"It looks as though the town is thriving."
Alex Longhurst, from Dog and Bone phone shop, on Cross Street, said he needed four new members of staff as he has recently expanded.
Karen Evans, from WH Smith, on The Cross, said their vacancy was part-time for 20 hours a week
"We are just replacing a member of staff," she said.
"It is a rare opportunity as we haven't got a fast turnover of staff. "
A part-time, 16 hours a week, position is also available at Johnsons The Cleaners on Bailey Street.
Mary Green, manager, said: "It is very rare to have a vacancy here. It is one of the jobs you are suited to or you're not and the people here are all suited to it.
"The reason there is a position is one of the girls is starting college. We are looking for someone with a retail based background."
