The long-awaited revamp of Market Drayton Police Station will go ahead and include improved detention facilities, an MP said today.

North Shropshire MP Owen Paterson was updated on progress with the project when he met the new chairman of the West Mercia Police Authority, Sheila Blagg, and Chief Constable Paul West at the force's headquarters this week.

Mr Paterson said: "Paul West was able to confirm that the building of a new station in Market Drayton is going ahead with detention facilities for low-risk prisoners.

"I was very pleased to learn about the positive progress made by West Mercia Police and look forward to continuing to work closely with Paul West and Sheila Blagg."

The existing Market Drayton police station dates back to the 1930s and is sited on a large plot.

West Mercia Police says the best way to offer improved facilities is with a purpose-built police station in front of the present building.
