Officers were attacked with stones and bottles during a disturbance in a Mid Wales town. No-one was injured, but one police car and another car were damaged.

The incident happened outside the Maes-y-Dail Stores in Fern Square, Maesyrhandir, Newtown.

The offenders climbed on to the roof of the shop and threw objects at officers and their patrol cars.

One was damaged, while a resident's car suffered a smashed window.

One resident, who did not wish to be named, witnessed part of the attack, describing it as a "terrifying ordeal".

They said: "There was a group of them on top of the shop throwing stones and bottles to the ground below.

"They were shouting and screaming and making such a noise, it was a terrifying ordeal for anyone who saw it.

"Thankfully, the police were on the scene really quickly and should be commended for how they dealt with the matter."

Five people in their late-teens and one in his 40s were arrested for public order offences.

Police said four of them have been released on bail pending further inquiries but could not confirm what had happened to the other two after the incident at 10.15pm on Saturday.

Inspector Paul Ridley, of Newtown Police, said: "Thankfully no member of the public or police officer sustained any injury during this incident.

"However, unfortunately, there was minor damage to one police vehicle and a private car parked in Fern Square suffered a smashed window."

He confirmed police had stepped up their patrols on the estate since and would continue to crack down on anti-social behaviour.
