The body of Mr Cooke, from Childs Ercall, was recovered by firefighters from the River Tern at Peplow, near Market Drayton, on Tuesday morning.

His sister-in-law, Glenys Cooke, from near Lichfield, said he was very well known in the village as he was involved in the local darts and dominoes scene.

She said: "He was just a character really."

She added Mr Cooke, was originally from Puddington, The Wirral, was one of five siblings, was not married and was retired having worked as a gardener at Peplow Hall.

Neighbour and close friend, Andrew Beckett, said Mr Cooke was like a grandfather figure to his daughter. "He is going to be sadly missed," he said.
