The kindness of strangers is alive and well in Market Drayton after public-spirited people stumped up £75 for a 94-year-old shopper who had her purse stolen.

The woman, who asked not to be named, had her purse taken while shopping at Morrisons in Market Drayton.

Now she has thanked all those people who kindly made donations.

She said she was touched by people's generosity in the wake of the theft on February 24.

Various people in the town and surrounding area have stumped up the cash and even bought the woman a new purse after reading about her ordeal.

Police are investigating the theft and say the victim had her purse taken from her wicker shopping basket, which she had left open, while shopping between about 1.15pm and 1.20pm.

She told police she felt her basket move and noticed a man standing very close to her who moved away immediately when he saw she had spotted him.

He is described as white, in his late 20s, of average build and wearing dark clothing. Anyone with information should contact police on 03003 333000.
