Lorry-hit statue to be returned to island

A statue seriously damaged when it was hit by a 14-tonne lorry is due to be put back in place in Telford next next week.

The memorial, which had stood on the Granville Roundabout in Donnington for 12 years, has been rebuilt and is due to be carefully lifted back in place on Monday.

The memorial to Telford's miners was damaged in October and it has been repaired by experts at a workshop at Ironbridge Power Station.

The iron sculpture depicting a miner with a pony and cart had initially been sited at Granville Country Park, having been created by 73-year-old Madeley artist Gerry Foxall 20 years ago.

Kevin Bond has painstakingly rebuilt the piece in the workshop.

A Telford & Wrekin Council spokesman said: "It has now been repaired and we are ready to reinstate it. We are planning to put it back on Monday. But this will depend on the weather as some welding has to be done on site."
