Crews were called to a property on the corner of East Road and Winifred's Drive in Donnington today, just after 1.30am.

One man was rescued from a first floor bedroom and taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation.

Four others who lived in the Salvation Army property had been alerted by smoke alarms and already made their way out.

Ian Leigh, Wellington fire station watch manager, said: "We then did a check of the house and found a man in a first-floor bedroom and he was dragged out by firefighters.

"Early investigations show the fire probably started by the cooker being left on.

"If there hadn't have been working fire alarms, these people would have found about about the fire the hard way."

Murray MacGregor, West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman, said: "A 51-year-old man was suffering from smoke inhalation."
