A man died today after he was hit by a train in Telford.

The incident involved a London Midland Trains train and happened between Oakengates and Wellington at about 7am.

West Midlands Ambulance Service was called by British Transport Police to the railway line where it crosses the A518 road at Beveley at 6.55am.

An incident support officer, an emergency care practitioner and an ambulance crew attended the scene.

Chris Kowalik, West Midland Ambulance Service spokesman, said: "On arrival, it was clear that nothing could be done to save the man and he was confirmed dead at the scene."

A spokesman for British Transport Police added: "BTP can confirm that a man has died after being struck by a train near to Oakengates Railway Station today. The incident, which was reported to police at 6.55am, is being treated as non-suspicious."

The 6.13am train travelling from Wolverhampton to Shrewsbury was brought to a halt after the collision with the man and all services were cancelled while police and ambulance attended.

The BTP spokesman said the railway line was handed back to Network Rail at 8.10am and a full report would be prepared for the coroner.

Arriva Trains Wales services terminated at Telford Central while the incident was being dealt with.
