playing1A north Shropshire play area has been closed for the foreseeable future after it was "wrecked" by vandals.

The attack was labelled "one step too far" after it left the site, in Grotto Road, Market Drayton, unsafe for children.

Councillor Rob Bentley, town mayor, said workmen had made the play area as safe as they could but it had been closed down.

"It's been wrecked," he said. "They have ripped fences up, they have broken the security light and smashed the fences.

"They have made it totally unsafe for children to play in. The workmen have tried to make it as safe as they can. We have closed it down temporarily. It has been vandalised in the past but never to the extent it has now. This one is one step too far."

Maria Hawkaluk, spokeswoman for Shropshire Police, said: "Damage was caused to fencing at the play area on Grotto Road between 4pm on Wednesday and 8am on Thursday."
