LETTER - On probably the hottest day of the year (May 6) I had to go to Shrewsbury to drop a friend off at the train station for a 2.30pm departure.

I had decided to combine this with a shopping trip. Leaving home at 2pm we progressed well until we reached the Crewe Street junction just past the pelican crossing - a five-minute trip. Then we met gridlock 15 minutes later. We had managed to travel at least 500 yards to the fire station.

Realising we would never make the station in time my friend elected to walk, I turned around realising it was a fruitless exercise to continue with the shopping trip. My friend managed to catch the train just in time, more luck than judgement.

I then travelled to Wellington Retail Park, which took me just 12 minutes, where I enjoyed free parking and easy access to the shops. So I did smile when I thought about an article I had read, I think it was by a councillor, stating that the new temporary diversions were working well.

Please listen to the people who use the town and the traders who are losing money and having their livelihoods threatened. And complete the pavement works before everyone deserts Shrewsbury for good.
