Volunteer staff are not foolish
I read with dismay a letter entitled "Fools work for nothing", in the Shropshire Star.

Please be aware that some people like to give something back and not take all the time. There are many different reasons why people work at charity shops.
Some are retired and it gives them a sense of purpose. Some do work placements to give them experience of working in a retail environment.
Some are disabled and unable to find work due to ill health, but can help out on what they call their "good days". You see, there are many reasons why people work for nothing, but nevertheless they are certainly not fools.
The person who said that only a fool works for nothing must have been very uncharitable. There are many people who look after family and friends for nothing. Do you also call them fools?
With regard to the manager's wages - it is none of our business. But I have seen these positions advertised and the wages are not high and not in the same league as many retail management positions.
