A Shropshire drug addict was today beginning a life sentence in prison for murdering his girlfriend.
Leon Edwards, 26, strangled 29-year-old Claire Comber and left her body lying at her home in Arleston, Telford, for more than four days.
He admitted killing her, but denied murder, claiming he did not mean to do it.
But jurors at Stafford Crown Court took less than four hours to convict Edwards of murder.
Edwards, of Harvey Crescent, Arleston, strangled Miss Comber during an argument fuelled by drink and drugs between December 31 last year and January 10.
Judge Simon Tonking yesterday jailed him for life and said he would serve at least 18 years in prison.
Detectives leading the investigation welcomed the sentence.
Detective Inspector Andy Parsons said: "This was a tragic case and we are pleased Edwards has been recognised as the selfish, violent and controlling individual he is.
"His actions have left three children without a mother. His incredible lack of remorse was demonstrated by the fact he returned to the house in Woollam Road to use drugs on at least one occasion while Claire's body remained upstairs where he had killed her.
"The thoughts of everyone involved with the investigation are with the family and friends of Claire Comber at this incredibly difficult time and we sincerely hope this guilty verdict offers them a little consolation as they attempt to rebuild their lives."
