Bill would seek truth of the EU
On June 8, the House of Lords put forward a Bill to be debated, "The European Union - Implications of Withdrawal".
On June 8, the House of Lords put forward a Bill to be debated, "The European Union - Implications of Withdrawal".
A similar bill was debated in March 2000 and again in June 2003.
On both, the Government denied such an enquiry, claiming the "self evident" benefits of membership were so wonderful it would be a waste of time.
This bill questioned the democracy of an unelected commission having the monopoly to propose legislation and carry out that function in secret.
These proposals are then negotiated, again in secret by the shadowy Committee of Permanent Representatives then go on to the Council of Ministers, still in disgraceful secrecy.
The only arbiter of any debate is the Luxemburg court, which is required, by treaty, to find for ever closer union. The Bill's proposer stated: "If we closed the House of Commons and made every law of the land in the House of Lords behind closed doors there would be riots in the street."
This is a damning indictment of the European Union by the House of Lords - it was not even mentioned in my paper this morning!
