As you may be aware, I have become very involved in the unitary debate and would like to explain to constituents why I feel so passionately about this issue.

I am determined that key decisions affecting Shrewsbury should only be taken by local people accountable to the local residents, through the ballot box.

I do not want representatives from places as far away as Whitchurch and Albrighton to be making the decisions that affect Shrewsbury and Atcham.

I feel it is important for my constituents to be able to approach me and, if necessary, challenge me on a position I have taken.

This accountability, this local awareness and understanding, has to be kept.

I believe it would be eroded by a unitary council, which would take responsibilities from the borough.

In addition, the figures for the cost of the restructuring are not infallible; in fact there are several reports that claim the restructuring will cost tens of millions of pounds.

This expense will be met by the local tax payer. I will not allow my constituents to be taxed further.

There is also an alternative, which would not cost any money to bring about. That is to move to what is known as an enhanced two-tier structure, which is a way of reforming the status quo.

My calls for an end to the unitary bid are backed by the majority of people in Shrewsbury and Atcham, as well as south Shropshire, and Bridgnorth, who voted against the idea.

I am therefore writing to all parish councils to ask them to support the alternative two-tier model with me.

I ask them to write to me by June 18.
