Goldfish will continue to be given away at Ludlow's May Fair.

Councillors met in Ludlow to debate whether the fish should be banned from Ludlow's May Fair, where they are given away to people who successfully throw darts at playing cards.

Ludlow residents Roy and Judith Payne had called for the ban on the grounds that the fish were poorly treated and it was cruel to give them away as prizes. But councillors stopped short of introducing a ban.

Ludlow's new Mayor Councillor Marie Glaze said she was in favour of the fish being given away as prizes.

She said: "I don't see anything wrong with it. It's part of our tradition."

Councillor Graeme Kidd said officials were examining the town's contract with May Fair operator, Wynns.

Carol Wynn, from Wynns, said people who were trying to introduce a ban were being killjoys.

A final decision will be made before the next May Fair in 2008.
