Regarding the sex shop in Harlescott, Shrewsbury. Further to your front page article on April 11, I would like to mention a few things that were not reported.

Councillors Vernon Bushell and Eileen Sandford, together with myself, sought earnestly to prevent a licence being granted.

We did so on the following grounds:

  • The vast majority of citizens of Harlescott did not want it in their area.

  • Its detrimental affect on many people.

  • It would not be helpful to the many families who are seeking to bring up their children with good morals.

  • The bad influence on under age people.

  • Its proximity to a footpath used by many.

  • The unsuitable nature of the area from a safety point of view.

We felt the applicants were only interested in the licence to promote business at the expense of encouraging sexual gratification.

The applicants agreed that we have the most problems in Europe in this area and felt that our over restrictive laws have contributed to this, but where would we be if they were more lax?

Pornography is the sixth largest business in the world and the vast majority are only concerned about the financial aspects of it.

I want to tell the people of Harlescott that we did try to oppose the licence on their behalf.

We are pleased that there will be no more sex shops in Harlescott and we trust that there will be no more in the town.
