My council tax statement for this year is £1,090, which will take one tenth of my total income. I have two pensions: the state pension and a private pension.

There is only the wife and myself in the house and we do not accumulate much refuse. There must be a better way of rating the council tax.

I have to pay all the insurances relating to building and contents, including insurance to cover possible drain damage or blockages. I and my wife do not smoke or drink, nor do we run a car .

About a year ago I had a blockage in my sewer cesspit. Seven Trent Water refused to unblock it, as it was on private property.

I had to pay for the unblocking myself. The blockage was caused by a disused nappy, which had come down the pipework.

It amazes me to know people on benefits can afford to drink, smoke cigarettes or run a car. It does not give the younger generation much incentive to work when they can do as they like without any worries about money.

But I do sense a change in some young people's attitude to appreciate outdoor activities. Better manners speak volumes to assess one's personality. They need the incentive to achieve something in their lives.

Some parents have not set a good example to there children and have not corrected them when being naughty in case they go in to a tantrum.

This present Government is a poor example of honesty. They say the NHS is safe in their hands but old people are cast aside after their working life.
