A concert by Irish singer and entertainer Brendan Shine has brought in £1,600 to the Shropshire Star's Flying Doctor Appeal. And that has been brought up to £2,000 thanks to cash raised at a wedding anniversary.

Telford couple Alan Heighway - who compered Brendan Shine's concert - and wife Barb celebrated 40 years of marriage.

The concert at The Place, Oakengates, was organised by Mrs Kath Evans of Oakengates, a long-standing fundraiser for the air ambulance helicopter.

"It was a full house and it was the best I have ever seen Brendan Shine," said Alan, of St Georges.

"He absolutely rocked the place. His daughter Emily was in his band too."

While Alan compered the show, Barb helped Kath with the sale of tickets and so on.

Nearly 300 family and friends were at the Alan and Barb's party to celebrate their anniversary and, instead of presents, the couple asked for donations.

"We raised £800 in total - £400 to the Flying Doctor Appeal and £400 to the Severn Hospice," said Alan.
