Mr Bushill-Matthews, (Starmail, January 27) says the EU government cannot impose legislation upon us. He knows that something like 75 per cent of our laws are imposed by the EU government and he's being ingenuous in saying that member states need to have signed treaties - of course we signed treaties, in the first instance our politicians lied to us and ever since they've gone ahead and signed without our permission.

It might be helpful if I were to quote from the statement by Lords Pearson of Rannoch and Willoughby de Broke, who have just joined UKIP to represent them in the House of Lords.

It reads: "We have joined UKIP because in our view it is the only party telling the British people the alarming truth about our relationship with the European Union: That the majority of our national law is now made in Brussels.

"That our representative Parliamentary democracy has therefore become largely redundant - we have lost the power to govern ourselves. The central privilege of that democracy, for which millions have died over hundreds of years, is that the British people should have the right to elect and dismiss those who make their laws. This has been betrayed by our membership of the EU."
