Homes and businesses in Roden lost their communication lines on Friday and desperate traders say they are losing out on business.

Among those affected are Roden Nurseries and Roden Rehoming Centre, where manager Louise Campbell said she believed the dogs were losing out on new homes.

"Nobody has been able to get through to us by phone for almost a week, which is frustrating," she said.

"I think we have probably lost some potential homes because people may be phoning to make arrangements to visit or may be interested in a specific dog they have seen on the website and can't get through."

Louise Oldfield, daughter of Roden Nurseries owner Mike Oldfield, said that they have been losing out on business but she wanted to reassure customers that the centre was open as usual.

"We are still open but there are rumours going round that we have closed. When people ring our number it is just an engaged tone. We have a lot of regular customers and a lot of incoming calls and no-one will know what is happening."

BT spokeswoman Emma Tennant said there was an underground fault in the area. She said: "We are having to replace around 80m of underground cable and in order to do this safely we are having to put temporary traffic lights up. We are continuing to work on it and it may be Saturday before we finish the work."
