A Shropshire couple are preparing to celebrate Christmas with their young son - thanks to a liver transplant he received when he was less than a year old.

Sarah Fox knows that if it was not for his donor, her two-year-old Harry would not be here now.

But now the toddler, from Bicton, Shrewsbury, is looking forward to a carefree Christmas at home with his parents and sister Maddie, four.

Harry was diagnosed with the rare liver disease Biliar Atresia when he was just five-weeks-old and needed a new liver before he turned two.

Last Christmas mum Sarah was anxiously checking Harry for infections after his transplant in March 2005 and the year before, she was waiting for news of a suitable liver donor.

But this year, Harry is much healthier and has not had to go back to hospital so the Fox family are looking forward to relaxing around the Christmas tree.

Mrs Fox, 36, said: "So far this year we have been really lucky. He's been going to Bicton playgroup and was a little lamb in the nativity.

"So far, he's been much better than last year and not had many infections so it could be his immunity is building up ."

Mrs Fox said it was very humbling to look at Harry and think if it was not for the donor, she would not be looking forward to a family Christmas.

Now Mrs Fox and her family are big campaigners to encourage people to join the NHS Organ Donor Register.
