Debate on charging of drivers
I read with interest B Davies's letter of November 14 regarding congestion charging in Shrewsbury. He is right to point out the negative aspects of the London congestion charge, but it has reduced traffic flows, without destroying the retail economy.

The reason they have spare buses is that the management company was told to supply extra buses, when in fact a similar number of buses can complete more trips due to the reduced journey times.
I really have no idea is charging will work in Shrewsbury. But what is congestion? I have lived away from Shrewsbury for over three years now with regular visits home.
Congestion up north is three lanes solid from 7am to at least 9am and again from 4 to 6.30pm. My dad hates sitting in a queue of four vehicles at a roundabout!
I agree that a sensible transport system needs to be put in place, but the biggest thing everybody could do is to consider the need to use the car. Could the journey be undertaken on foot, by bicycle or using the bus?
