What Tony has failed to tell us
There is a countrywide campaign to save our post offices. The Prime Minister is quick to tell us that his Government has subsidised them over the last 10 years to the tune of £2.1billion.
There is a countrywide campaign to save our post offices. The Prime Minister is quick to tell us that his Government has subsidised them over the last 10 years to the tune of £2.1billion - he omitted to mention the 30 years preceding those 10 when successive governments annually creamed off up to £300 million from the profits of the PO. I know because I worked for them.
Mr Blair also failed to mention that the PO problem is out of his hands. Under proposals adopted by the EU commission on October 18, national postal operators no longer have a monopoly over the distribution of any type of mail. Brussels argues that the liberalisation will make postal services more effective and user friendly.
This is the same clap-trap the EU used when it ordered the privatisation of our railways, water, gas, electricity and telephone - all have been unmitigated disasters for Britain.
