Real point in row is missed
Most commentators have missed the point in the recent controversy involving Jack Straw. It is nothing to do with religion or race, it is about culture. European business people, wishing to trade in Japan must, among many things, learn that they must explain their position within their business structure so that their Japanese counterpart can judge his/her position in comparison.
An inability to achieve this will lead to a very difficult if not impossible business relationship.
In western Europe we need to see the face of those to whom we are speaking so as to judge how what we are saying is being received.
Is there a full smile of warmth?
Is there a wry smile of cynicism?
Is there a bland face of failure to get the message?
Are there pursed lips of frustration? Are there gritted teeth of anger? Is the brow lined or furrowed in puzzlement?
When in Rome . . .
