Shropshire Star

Plenty of excellent radio

I enjoy listening to all the presenters on Radio Shropshire, including Jim Hawkins who seems to have mellowed in the last few weeks. Perhaps he does read the letters page in the Shropshire Star. However he (Jim) still enjoys stirring things up with the odd caller to his phone-in and chat show.

Jim should take a few tips from his fellow presenter Eric Smith who is very forthright but fair - even to politicians.

It is strange that I nearly always agree with Eric, even when he and Jim engage in friendly banter before Jim's programme starts at nine o'clock. Could it be that Jim deliberately takes the opposing view just to stir things up a little?

When Eric's in the mood he forms a great comedy act with Lorraine which helps to get rid of those early morning blues.

The most cheerful voice on the airwaves must surely belong to Krissi Carpenter although "your old mate" Matthew Carr would run Krissi close with his Irish blarney. Colin Young can charm the birds from the trees.

If you want two presenters who are bright and can chat, then you can rely on Claire Ashford and Samantha Hatton. Finally it's news around Shropshire with Tracey Higgins - the thinking man's crumpet.

Keith Middleton and Nonny James are just two of the first class fill-in presenters who entertain us.

The name Jim Hawkins brings to mind Treasure Island and if I was a castaway on a desert island then Radio Shropshire would make a good companion - including Jim Hawkins!

I like the mixture of chat and music and they are also tops for local sport with commentaries on Shrewsbury and Telford matches etc. To quote from the song: "Radio Shropshire - you're the tops."
