Unimpressed by bloom success
The photo shoots and the mutual back slapping is the fall out of Shrewsbury's success in capturing one of the many Britain in Bloom awards, but at what cost to me, a rate payer?
No doubt the borough will not publish the true cost.
The fact remains that my security on the streets is to be compromised due to the CCTV system being manned during certain hours, the selling off of Shrewsbury's jewel, Rowleys mansion, the building of a theatre that nobody seems to want, the lifting of covenants on community land at the Gay Meadow, together with the pending stealth taxes that will be handed out by an army of traffic officials and the possible congestion charges will make life hell for a number of us.
So with appeals from some councillors to "think outside of the box" to try and alleviate the pain that a lot of people will have due to increased council tax, and no doubt the stealth taxes, I would ask the council to look at thinking outside of the box themselves, the flower box.
Put the Britain in Bloom money to better use. Stop the building of the very expensive theatre and keep Rowleys as a focal point of the town.
I also ask all people of Shrewsbury before they vote at the next local elections, think outside of the box. Look at who you are voting for. Are the candidates really looking after themselves with the interest of local businesses, or are they individuals who have a passion for the history of the town and for quality of live but more importantly the people?
Certainly the cost of the numerous photo sessions and the social events surrounding the Britain in Bloom have not impressed me at all.
A Cosnett, Shrewsbury
