Lazy giant the 'real' reason
In Friday's Shropshire Star was an article introducing a new brochure by Marc Petty which described The Wrekin and its past glories. With all respect to yourselves and Marc Petty you failed to relate the "true" story about how The Wrekin was really created.
In the very early medieval ages, a giant called Madog was travelling North following the River Severn towards Shrewsbury carrying a spade full of soil. His objective was to dam the river and drown the inhabitants of Shrewsbury to provide a tasty meal.
Having misunderstood the distance to Shrewsbury he saw a cobbler approaching carrying many pairs of worn out shoes. The now tiring giant enquired how far away the town was. The cobbler, seeing that the Giant was up to no good, replied that he had worn out all the shoes walking from Shrewsbury because it was that far away. The Giant hearing this said that it was too far for him to continue so he dumped the soil by the river and returned South, thus forming The Wrekin.
