The Central Trains service was near to Bilbrook Station, near Wolverhampton.

Dozens of Shropshire commuters had to remain on the train as British Transport Police were called to the scene.

Delays were expected on the line between Shrewsbury and Birmingham and Central Trains were providing a bus service for passengers.

A British Transport Police spokeswoman said that the woman was hit by the 6.48am train from Shrewsbury to Birmingham.

She said it was close to Bilbrook Station in Birches Road at Codsall, and officers were investigating the incident and seeking to identify the victim of the accident.

"The woman's body was discovered in the area of the track and the circumstances of the incident are being investigated, but at this stage it is not being treated as suspicious," she said.

Shropshire Ambulance spokesman Steve Parry said that several ambulances responded to the call to the railway station before the woman's body was found nearby.

Central trains spokesman Ged Burgess said the line was blocked and they were currently waiting the go-ahead from police to reopen the line.

"The train that struck the woman is still on the line with passengers on board, which is the safest and most comfortable place for them to be, although it's not convenient.

"We are trying to arrange replacement buses to take passengers in both directions between the Telford Central and Wolverhampton stations," said Mr Burgess.
