Right to extend markets?
Before the county council decided the costs for setting up Oswestry's Market down Bailey Street, did they consider whether the town had any right to extend its facility? The Market and Fairs Act of 1848 was passed to remove the markets from the streets of the town and replace them with dedicated sites. Haven't they a copy in their archives?
One of the places to be set up under their act was the Market Hall where Woolworth's now stands and it went through to the Cross via the Clawdd Du.
If the town council wants to get nearer the people it has a remedy though it could be costly to re-establish the market in that area. And whilst talking about the Clawdd Du it is interesting to note that under their act they still have a power to close it. But who paid for its improvements a year or two ago? I think we should be told. As probably the Shropshire parish council with the largest income it should not have much difficulty in financing many of the things that the borough and the county seem to be willing to do with other people's cash.
