Market revamp 'will boost town'

A scheme to redevelop Ludlow's Market Square could save the town's trade and bring it a new generation of shoppers, it has been claimed. The revamped trading square would include cast aluminium decorated stalls, an undercover area for providing  entertainment, and the space for up to 40 stalls.

The plans were unveiled at a meeting of Ludlow Town Council last night and will be available for the public to have their say at a consultation day on Saturday.

Ludlow Town Council has been working with Parkland Consortium Plc to come up with a scheme for the Market Square, which it says is in desperate need of help.

Town clerk Paul Russell said: "This could make Ludlow a special place to visit again. It would encourage people to shop in the market and make the market a part of the town again.

"The market is integral to the viability of the town centre."

Mr Russell said the town council wanted the market to face outwards at the shops, rather than the current inward set up, and to remove the mobile units so that people could actually see the market.

He added: "The mobile units have been somewhat of a problem as to what we do with them. At present it is unsightly that all people see are the back of these vans, which shield the view of the rest of the market.

"This scheme would open it all up and make it much more attractive and inviting to visitors."

But some traders have claimed it would be hazardous to pedestrians and have a negative impact on trade. The plans can be seen at The Harley Centre at Ludlow College from 10am on Saturday.
