Judge not taking the right road
The finding by Judge Morgan that Mr Cadden, a Telford cyclist, had been guilty of inconsiderate cycling (Shropshire Star, August 8) is a very worrying development.
It highlights the predicament faced by most cyclists. If they use the poorly designed cycle paths offered, safety and speed are compromised - if they use roads, there is always the possibility of conflict with motorists.
Society's attitude to cycling is unhelpful. On one hand, one is encouraged to "get on your bike" - for health benefits or for the good of the environment.
Yet this is more than counterbalanced by a greater emphasis on the speed of motoring.
Hence little money or thought is put into the provision of cycling facilities.
Surely we do not want keen cyclists like Mr Cadden forced to drive to work instead? Until well designed and regularly maintained cycle routes are provided cyclists will need to use roads.
Motorists should consider voicing their support for proper provision for cycling, not rage against cyclists.
Shared paths are not a safe option. Speeds and needs are different.
Meanwhile, I do hope Mr Cadden appeals against this unfortunate judgement and that justice will prevail.
