Plane nothing to do with us

We wish to answer the letter of August 10, 2006, in which a resident of Wem expressed concerns of an aircraft flying low on the night of Friday, August 4.

We had hoped RAF Lyneham would respond to this letter, however despite several attempts to contact their community relations officer to no avail, we felt compelled to respond.

The aircraft concerned was NOT from or visiting Sleap Airfield. It was a C130J Hercules from RAF Lyneham which entered an "area of intense aerial activity" five miles north of Welshpool at 250ft at approximately 10.30pm and exited the area seven miles north of Ternhill on a night flying exercise using night vision.

Sadly, this is yet another case of Sleap Airfield being needlessly blamed for aircraft operating either outside of our zone, or outside of our operational period and have nothing to do with Sleap Airfield whatsoever.
