The Shropshire Star has launched a major campaign in which we demand a Fair Deal for Farmers.

We aim to highlight the importance of agriculture to our region – and enable you to support businesses that sell produce grown or reared on our fields.

Scores of shops, pubs and restaurants help our rural economy by buying from farmers in Shropshire and Mid Wales.

Farms are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of the direct relationship between themselves and customers.

Today the Shropshire Star launches a new online directory in which we will list businesses that have a direct relationship with farms in the region.

We will highlight the world-class produce that comes from our farms and that ensures our restaurants and shops can offer guaranteed top quality.

And we will continue to highlight the ongoing efforts to ensure farmers, who have battled issues including low milk prices and TB in cattle, receive a fair deal for their produce.

Businesses who back our farmers will be able to display a Fair Deal for Farmers symbol, highlighting the fact they stock local produce with known provenance.

Richard Yates, chairman of Shropshire's branch of the National Farmers' Union, today backed the campaign. The farmer, of Middleton Scriven, near Bridgnorth, said people are now far more conscious about what they eat and the emphasis on fresh, local produce presents an exciting opportunity for farmers in the county, as people increasingly turn to products closer to home.

Shropshire Star editor Martin Wright said: "We are proud to launch this campaign and hope it will help farmers, businesses and customers. We aim to make a real difference."

As long as you use produce made by farmers in our region, you can be included.
