Ale lovers of all shapes and sizes, some in fancy dress and others with pint-sized pooches in tow, flocked in their hundreds to the Ludlow Brewing Company's Station Drive base to celebrate the return of the event.

Last year's ale massacre did not take place because of Covid and in 2020 a deluge put paid to the tipsy hopes of drinkers.

"It's absolutely brilliant to see all the people back," said front of house manager Julie Davis on Saturday evening. "It's nice to see people out and enjoying themselves."

Some 20 different ales were available and the eager drinkers had polished many of them off with a day still to go.

"When they are gone, they are gone," said Julie who is already looking forward to next year's event.

For Ludlow Brewery fan and former town rugby player Tom Colton, 38, and Charlie, his teetotal smooth hair fox terrier, it was a chance to have a pint or two of his favourite Ludlow Gold ale.

"I think from the amount of people you see here, everyone is keen to get out and meet with other people," said Tom, who lives in the town.

"This is probably the most vibrant place in town at the moment, many of the pubs are still suffering.

"And here you can guarantee to get a pint of decent bitter."

Entertainment was also lined up on the Friday and Saturday, with a Ludlow Fringe comedy event on the Friday and local band Don't Feed the Goat on Saturday.

The beer festival also ran until Sunday, with whatever was left of the ales from a hectic first two days.
