Shrewsbury Christmas Festival opened at Raven Meadows on Saturday and was scheduled to run until just before midnight yesterday. It was due to feature food stalls and entertainment.

However, a statement on its Facebook page confirmed it had been cancelled. It said: “Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond our control this event has been cancelled. All ticket holders for Sunday have been issued a full refund, which will return to the purchasing account within 7-10 working days.”

Some ticket holders took to social media to express their views on the cancellation.

Becky Jones said the event was ‘diabolical’. She added: “The organisers should donate any profits to charity. Let’s face it, it won’t have cost much to put on.”

The organisers of Shrewsbury Winter Festival, which previously took place in the town for three years, said the cancelled event was nothing to do with them after being inundated with complaints.
