Knights battle at castle

Medieval knights will clash to mark the 10th anniversary of the restoration and re-opening of a castle, medieval knights will be battling each other within its walls.

Whittington Castle near Oswestry will be hosting the event on June 24 and 25, when Knights in Battle, a specialist society will spent the weekend at the castle.

Members of the group will stage a 13th century foot tournament pitching knights in chain mail against each other in a a single combat for a prize of gold.

There will be training fights without armour and some archery as well and camp cooks will be providing food for the knights.

Castle manager, Sue Ellis, said: "The Knights In Battle Medieval Society is a Sheffield based group specialising in bringing medieval history to life.

"Their goal is to produce an excellent appearance and a high quality of entertainment at public events.

"The society represents the household, soldiers, captain, cooks, armourers and other camp-followers."

The event will run from 10am until 4pm each day with the cost for entry £2 for adults and £1 for children.
