It comes after thousands missed the action two years ago because they were stuck in nine-mile queues. Traffic congestion was also a feature this year.

Organisers said making tickets available in advance was a "necessary step".

Clive Elliott, director of the show at the RAF Museum at Cosford, said the decision was taken to prevent a repeat of scenes in recent years which has seen traffic build up for several miles as thousands flock to the event.

He said the 2015 show, which will be held on June 14, is set to be better organised with improved traffic flow and access to the site.

Mr Elliott said: "The move to become advance ticket-only was a logical and necessary step for a number of important reasons, and it brings us in line with other major events.

"Speeding up access to the show is our number one priority, we want to give our visitors the best experience possible and we believe that these changes will make the 2015 event our best yet."

More than 50,000 people enjoyed this year's spectacular show watching displays by the Red Arrows and the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and the Blades.

Along with the launch of ticket sales, came an announcement of the air show's key theme for 2015 – the 70th anniversary of VE Day. "VE70 will be our main theme," said the air show's commercial manager Marilyn Summers. "We will be recreating the look and atmosphere of 1945 in a Victory Village containing music, food, vehicles and exhibitions of the era."

Tickets for the show are on sale now, priced at £22 and with free entry for accompanied under-16s. Visit www.cosfordairshow.co.uk
