A British woman is among the dead in the flash floods that have swept the Portuguese holiday island of Madeira.

Pamela Gaines, 50, from North Humberside, died when her taxi was swept away in the hills above the island's capital, Funchal.

At least 42 people have been killed in the flooding, which followed torrential rain and 60mph winds on Saturday.

More than 120 people were being treated in hospital.

More than 2,000 British tourists have been told to stay indoors as more bade weather is expected.
