Shropshire Star

Evitts & Co making waves

Simon Evitts believes variety can help title-chasing Shrewsbury maintain their focus.

Evitts' table-topping side return to action at home to Trentham tomorrow after a two-week break in Midlands 3 West (North).

Shrewsbury have won all of their 16 matches but Evitts is mixing up training in order to avoid complacency.

He took the squad swimming last month and followed their whitewash of Wednesbury with a trip to an assault course.

"We're mixing it up in terms of what we are doing with the training," said player/coach Evitts.

"We're at the club regularly but we've also been swimming, we took 25 of us to do some work with our strength and conditioning coach.

"We went to Prestfelde School and only found out when we got there that one lad couldn't swim! They did some work and we also played some water polo and had a bit of fun.

"It's keeping everyone fresh and grounded, and I think that's the main thing.

"I've played before against teams who have been successful and they've been really arrogant and become a team that you dislike playing against.

"I hope we've not been that team. We want to be grounded and not get ahead of ourselves."

Ash Patterson picked up a hamstring strain in the win at Wednesbury and is unlikely to be risked.

Mission number one is to get promoted, whether that be second or first; number two as champions and number three to write club history and be undefeated would be something special.

That's six games away and there's a long way to go, there's a bit of work to do yet.
