Joe Mason enthused about new Wolves strike partnership

Revitalised striker Joe Mason says the arrival of new Jon Dadi Bodvarsson is a 'godsend' as the pair look to engineer a prolific strike partnership.

Mason has scored twice already this season, while Bodvarsson netted on his debut at Rotherham and has impressed up front.

New boss Walter Zenga has praised Mason for his unselfish attitude in fulfilling different roles for the team.

And Mason said things had started well under the new boss – and with Wolves' new signings.

"I've got a couple of goals and it's always nice to get off and running early doors," he told the Express & Star.

"I've played a few different positions as well and I'm getting used to that and finding my feet.

"I do like playing on the right, I get to go into little pockets. Further down the line I'm more comfortable up front.

"There are a few new faces and it usually takes a while to gel but Joao (Teixeira) has slotted in seamlessly, Helder (Costa) coming off the bench and obviously Jon – it's all started off pretty positive.

"Prince (Oniangue) has looked really solid in training – a really strong, commanding midfielder.

"He likes to break play up and get forward as well, that's the first impression I've got.

"We're taking it game by game, I know it's a boring old cliché, but we're building and the connection between the players is getting better and better."

Ex-boss Kenny Jackett spoke almost on a weekly basis at Mason needing a strong, physical player alongside to get the best out of him.

It's early days, but it seems Bodvarsson could be that man,

"It's been really good having him there, it's nice to have that presence up front," Mason said.

"That's the sort of player I really like playing with.

"He's very unselfish, but he's got quality as well.

"I know Kenny was trying to get someone in but it wasn't possible in the end.

"Now we have it's a godsend for me and I'm really looking forward to building on the partnership we've already got so far."

Zenga has certainly made a big impact with both players and fans in his first few weeks at Molineux.

Mason has been impressed – and hopes that Wolves will continue the Zenga revolution with a win in the West Midlands derby at St Andrew's today.

He added: "The gaffer is very good – his attention to detail is spot on, every little thing, and he gives you loads of confidence as well, with Stefano (Cusin) and Rob (Edwards).

"He just wants to win, and it really comes across.

It makes you give that extra bit to win for him.

"The way we train is quite tough and then we ease off (towards the end of the week) and do tactical work. He's very passionate.

"A lot of managers have their own training methods and he's different in that sense, looks into detail at the other teams and how we can break them down. It worked against Reading.

"I can't wait for the Birmingham game, the atmosphere will be good. Derbies are usually pretty tight but we'll be going there for the win.

"They're quite physical, direct, with a big man up front and they play off him. We've been working on that to see how we can counter that."
