Kenny Jackett: Wolves showed character in win

Wolves made it seven points from nine with Saturday's 2-1 win at Ashton Gate to climb to third in League One.

But victory was only possible after they weathered City's storm in the early part of the second period following a thoroughly dominant first half from Wolves.

All the visitors had to show for their dominance was Bakary Sako's 22nd-minute free kick.

Jay Emmanuel-Thomas cancelled that out following Richard Stearman's slip, before Matt Doherty's 85th-minute winner.

Jackett said: "Character is a big factor as well as technique, and to come through in a game which could have gone either way is a very good achievement.

"It became a big test of character for our players to make sure we came through it and we did. Sometimes it's not just about technique, it's about heart as well."

Jackett added: "After the mistake, we stopped passing the ball for 10 or 15 minutes which has been our strength so far this season, and we lost a bit of confidence.

"We shouldn't do that just because of one setback – if we can play proper football, we can achieve a lot. We can't lose confidence and stop making the right pass or not look for the ball.

"There were a couple of very good saves from my goalkeeper and a terrific one from theirs from Kevin Doyle and it was end to end.

"But it was a fantastic win for us. That's seven points out of nine and two of those games were away from home."

Jackett insisted it's too early to be getting carried away.

He said: "A start is 10 games, not three – that gives you a good idea because you've played about half the teams, some home and some away, some big clubs and some small ones.

"So 10 matches gives you a fair reflection of where you are and perhaps what you need to be successful that season.

"What we have seen so far doesn't secure anything, but the football we played certainly does show promise."

Meanwhile, Matt Doherty has claimed the winning goal – despite TV replays being inconclusive as to whether his 85th-minute shot went over the line before defender Aden Flint touched the ball in.

Doherty said: "Sako crossed it and I just ran in. I almost made a meal of it because the ball caught my studs and it just bounced up. I knew it came off their guy but I wasn't sure if it was in or not.

"Him and Doyle were running in there so fast but it might have been in already. But I don't think Flint will want it! I think he's given it to me.

"I don't even know why I was up there – my man must have been on the halfway line. All I care about is that we won.

"We were pushing for the win because a draw wasn't good enough after the start we had – we could have been two or three-nil up at half-time."

Meanwhile, Aussie trialist striker Patrick Antelmi gave Wolves under-21s a half-time lead at Newcastle but they were beaten 3-1.
